The Federation Press

‘Federation Press is Australian and has a great backlist. Its publications have an edge which excited me and I wanted the scope to publish a new style of text book – scholarship for a reflective student audience.’

Jill Hunter, Professor, UNSW Sydney

‘[It’s] imperative for practitioners to build professional libraries of well written texts so as to be able to draw upon the clear and up to date distillation of principle and authority. Federation Press has been at the forefront of publishing such texts  ….’

Andrew Bell, President, New South Wales Court of Appeal

The Federation Press is a proudly independent publisher of books with ideas. Publishing a mix of excellent titles for the student and legal practitioner market with an emphasis on education, analysis and debate. Our imprint Desert Pea Press publishes high quality non-law titles.

We are based in Sydney, and wish to acknowledge and thank the traditional custodians of this land, the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, for the opportunity we’ve had to live on and work on this wonderful country. We acknowledge and respect their role as First Law makers and their continuing connection to culture and country in this city.

We place authors at the heart of what we do and have kept our editorial team in-house, allowing our authors the comfort and security of communicating directly and easily with their editor. Production is high-quality and local and we market our books with effort and enthusiasm. We also nurture academic talent providing creative publishing opportunities for new academics, including through The Holt Prize.

Additionally, The Federation Press sponsors a number of tertiary awards including The Federation Press prize for Public Law at the University of Sydney, the Administrative Law prize at the University of Western Sydney and the Francis Forbes Society of Australian Legal History Essay prize for tertiary, secondary and junior school students.

Christopher Holt, Diane Young and Kathryn Fitzhenry founded The Federation Press in 1987. Now with over 400 books in print and publishing up to 30 new books and new editions annually the press is run by two publishers with experience at some of Australia’s largest publishing companies, combining big company depth and expertise with small company flexibility, quality and commitment. They are part of a small and incredibly productive in-house team of experienced editors, marketers, and sales, administration and warehouse staff.
