Philip Ayres was the biographer of Owen Dixon, Ninian Stephen, Cardinal Patrick Francis Moran, Douglas Mawson and Malcolm Fraser. A Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities and of the Royal Historical Society, he taught at the University of Adelaide, Monash University, Vassar College and Boston University, and was a recipient of the Centenary Medal for contributions to literature. He was also the author of historical works on seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Britain including Classical Culture and the Idea of Rome in Eighteenth-Century England, and of a personal memoir, Private Encounters in the Public World.
