Kelly Richards completed a PhD in criminology from the University of Western Sydney in 2006, after being awarded the University of Western Sydney Medal for her Honours thesis in 2001.

She has lectured in Criminology and worked on criminological research projects at the University of Western Sydney, Sydney University, and the University of Technology, Sydney and is currently a Research Analyst at the Australian Institute of Criminology and a Visiting Fellow at the Australian National University.

In 2010, she travelled to Canada, the United States of America and the United Kingdom to research restorative processes for reintegrating child sex offenders as the ACT Government Office for Women Audrey Fagan Churchill Fellow.
