Jennifer Nielsen is Associate Professor and Deputy Director, Teaching and Learning, at the School of Law and Justice, Southern Cross University. In 1995, Jennifer helped bring attention to the specific justice needs in rural and regional communities with her study, Gender Bias in the Civil Litigation System and its impact on Women as Civil Litigants. More recently, she participated in the project led by Associate Professor Amanda Kennedy that created teaching materials to prepare law students for legal careers in rural and regional Australia. She was the NSW Law and Justice Foundation’s inaugural ‘Volunteer of the Year’ (2001) for her long-term commitment to improving access to justice in the Northern Rivers region, particularly for socially and economically marginalised people. She is the current Chairperson of the Northern Rivers Community Legal Centre, and before joining Southern Cross in 1994, practised as a solicitor in regional New South Wales and Victoria.
