Jane Kotzmann is an Associate Professor in the School of Law at Deakin University, cross-theme lead for animal and environmental protection with the Centre for Law as Protection at Deakin University, and Executive Committee member of the Australasian Animal Law Teachers’ and Researchers’ Association (AALTRA). Jane’s research focuses on how laws can be strengthened to better protect animals, including through the recognition of animal rights. In 2024, the AALTRA Australian Animal Law Research Prize was awarded to Jane for her paper, ‘Sentience and Intrinsic Worth as a Pluralist Foundation for Fundamental Animal Rights’ published in the Oxford Journal of Legal Studies. Jane’s article titled ‘Recognising the Sentience of Animals in Law: A Justification and Framework for Australian States and Territories’ published in the Sydney Law Review was given an Australian Legal Research Award in 2022 for Best Early Career Research Article. In 2024, Jane instituted units in animal law at Deakin University.
