Bruce Debelle AO QC graduated from St Mark’s College and the University of Adelaide with an honours degree in law in 1960.
After serving a year as judge’s associate to Sir Victor Windeyer, he practised as a barrister and solicitor in Adelaide. From 1978 to 1981, he was a Commissioner of the Australian Law Reform Commission. On returning to legal practice, he was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1982.
He served as a judge of the Supreme Court of South Australia from 1990-2018. He has also served as an acting judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales for two terms in 2008 and 2009, and as an acting judge of the Supreme Court of South Australia since 2008.
He was President of the Law Society of South Australia from 1989 to 1990, and in 1990 was President-elect of the Law Council of Australia. He was Chairman of the Judicial Conference of Australia in 2007 and 2008.
He was chairman of the Australian String Quartet from 1998 to 2001. He reads the Oxford Book of English Verse and enjoys classical music.
