Terry Irving is an Honorary Associate in the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Sydney where he was previously an Associate Professor of Government. He is a former president of the Australian Society for the Study of Labour History and vice-president of the History Council of New South Wales.

For nine years he edited Labour History – A Journal of Labour and Social History. Now working on studies of labour intellectuals, his previous books dealt with labour heritage and history, youth movements, and Vere Gordon Childe. His best known book (with R W Connell) is Class Structure in Australian History.
