Shane Simpson AM, LLB (Hons), M Jur, D Univ (hon) is a Special Counsel with Simpsons Solicitors. They are the preeminent cultural property lawyers in Australia and New Zealand and act for national, state and local collecting institutions across Australia and New Zealand as well as museum-related professional associations, curators, designers, collectors, benefactors and benevolent foundations. He has lectured extensively in the area in universities, professional conferences and master classes.
Shane’s previous publications include Visual Artist & the Law and Museums and Galleries: a Practical Legal Handbook, and the 2009 online predecessor of this publication, “Collections Law” and numerous national and international journal articles. He also headed the Australian government enquiry Copyright Collecting Societies in Australia and the Australian government’s review of the Protection of Movable Cultural Heritage Act 1986, “Borders of Culture”.
He has extensive experience on boards of leading cultural organisations including the National Library of Australia, the Bundanon Trust, Museums and Galleries NSW, the National Maritime Museum, the National Association of the Visual Arts, the Crafts Council of Australia and Australia Exhibitions Touring Agency, NSW Film and Television Office and the NZ Film Commission.
