Emeritus Professor Peter Boyce earned an MA in modern history from the University of Western Australia and a PhD in political science from Duke University in the USA. He has held academic appointments in four Australian universities, including the chair of political science at the University of Queensland and the University of Western Australia.
From 1985 to 1996 he served as Vice-Chancellor of Murdoch University, following which he was awarded visiting fellowships at two Oxford colleges.

He is now an Honorary Research Fellow in the University of Tasmania’s School of Government. In 1995 Peter Boyce was made an Officer in the Order of Australia “for services to education, international relations and the community”.
