Neil Gunningham is a lawyer and interdisciplinary social scientist who specializes in safety, health and environmental regulation. He is Co-Director of the National Research Centre for Occupational Health and Safety Regulation and Professor in the Regulatory Institutions Network and Fenner School of Environment and Society, Australian National University.

His previous books include Shades of Green: Business, Regulation and Environment (with Kagan and Thornton), Smart Regulation (with Grabosky) and Regulating Workplace Safety (with Johnstone). He was previously Foundation Director of the Australian Centre for Environmental Law, and Visiting and Senior Fulbright Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley.
