Kate Warner is an Emeritus Professor of Law at the University of Tasmania. She was Foundation Director of Tasmania Law Reform Institute and served in that role from 2001 to 2014 during which she oversaw some 20 projects. She is a national and international recognised expert in sentencing in Australia. Prior to her appointment as Governor of Tasmania, she was a member of the Sentencing Advisory Council of Tasmania and the sentencing editor for the Criminal Law Journal (from 1998-2014). Between 2008 and 2021 she led three research projects which employed an innovative method of using jurors from real trials to gauge public opinion on sentencing. Kate is a fellow of the Australian Academy of Law and the Australian and New Zealand Society of Criminology.
