John L Anderson, PhD is a Professor of Criminal Law and Evidence at the Newcastle Law School, University of Newcastle. As well as having a distinguished academic career, John has extensive practical experience in criminal law and evidence. He is a very experienced law educator and has co-ordinated and taught courses in Evidence, Criminal Law and Procedure, Advanced Criminal Law and Advocacy. John has received various awards for excellence in teaching, including a prestigious national award from the Australian Learning & Teaching Council.

John’s research scholarship focuses on questions of unfairness and inequity in the criminal justice system, particularly issues relating to sentencing of offenders, life imprisonment, parole and recidivism. More recently his research work has extended to elder abuse, restorative practices and medico-legal collaborations in advance personal planning. He has published several books, book chapters and peer-reviewed articles in leading journals focusing mainly on evidence law, criminal law and sentencing.
