Joan Kimm is a graduate of the University of Melbourne in History and Law. She has subsequently worked as a Solicitor, at the Monash Orientation Scheme for Aborigines and as a Legal Research Assistant. She has completed postgraduate work in law at Monash University where she is now a PhD student.
