Dr J A Watson is a graduate of the Australian National University (BA/LLB (Hons)), Cambridge University (LLM) and University of Sydney (PhD). He commenced work as Associate to the Hon Justice Paul D Finn of the Federal Court of Australia; and as a solicitor, in London at the firm Linklaters and then in Sydney at Freehills. He was called to the NSW Bar in 2004, where he practises at Banco Chambers. He is a co-editor of Historical Foundations of Australian Law (Federation Press, 2013) and a casual lecturer at the University of Sydney, including in the courses Equity and Topics in Legal History.

He was a finalist of the inaugural 2015 Holt Prize for The Duty to Account: Development and Principles.
