Law in Context

Abstract from Volume 28 No 2 (2010) For Martin Chanock - Essays on Law and Society

Educating Cause Lawyers in Australia After South Africa

Chris Arup is Professor of Business Law at Monash University, Melbourne.  He taught at La Trobe University between 1979 and 2001.

This chapter praises Martin Chanock for his contribution to the education of cause lawyers at La Trobe University in Australia. Martin was an educator and administrator in Australia for more than thirty years. Australian cause lawyers operate mostly by means of conventional legal techniques, common law and legislation based claims, and latterly the processes of the new regulatory governance. Martin worked to ensure that La Trobe’s future lawyers appreciated the fragile political and juridical underpinnings of a liberal democracy like Australia. He helped La Trobe provide the rare opportunity to practise as a social justice lawyer.
