Out of Africa: Reading Martin Chanock’s Scholarship in the Global North

Jonathan Todres, BA (Clark University), JD (Columbia Law School), is Associate Professor of Law at Georgia State University College of Law.

This short article seeks to engage Martin Chanock’s work on the role of culture and custom in framing and reinforcing differences across race, gender, geography and other dimensions. It focuses upon select writings of Chanock’s on culture and human rights. In doing so, this article aims to highlight the relevance of Chanock’s work beyond Sub-Saharan Africa and in particular to the Global North.
