Abstract from Volume 27 No 2 (2009) Indigenous Australians and the Commonwealth Intervention

The Northern Territory Intervention It's Not Our Dream

Dr Tom Calma is an Aboriginal elder from the Kungarakan tribal group and a member of the Iwaidja tribal group whose traditional lands are south west of Darwin and on the Coburg Peninsula in Northern Territory, respectively.

This article will examine the elements of the Intervention and its intended outcomes, and the reforms that have been implemented to date. The article will conclude with an assessment of how effective the Intervention has been, and how a rights-based approach can inform any future policy development needed for realistically addressing family violence and child abuse and closing the gap on Indigenous disadvantage in the Northern Territory, or elsewhere in Australia.
