Abstract from Volume 27 No 1 (2009) Critical Assessments of International Criminal Courts

Insufficiently Hybrid: Assessing the Special Court for Sierra Leone

Tim Kelsall holds a PhD from the University of London (SOAS), has taught politics at the Universities of Oxford and Newcastle, and is a former editor of African Affairs, the world's highest impact Africanist journal.

Although there seems to be an emerging consensus in international circles that the Special Court for Sierra Leone has been a relative success story, this article queries that view. It details a number of political, institutional, and cultural ways in which the Court failed adequately to adjust to local context.
