Abstract from

The Legal Profession and the Transfer of Sovereignty: Hong Kong

Jill Cottrell and Yash Ghai

This article examines the role of the legal profession in Hong Kong in the context of the change of sovereignty over it from Britain to the Peopleís Republic of China. At this time in the professionís history a good deal can be learned about the specific features of the legal profession in Hong Kong and challenges to its organisation, ideology and work that arise from the very different political and economic organisation and value system of the new sovereign, as well as from other pressures, internal and external.
