Abstract from Volume 23 No 2 (2006) Regulating Health Practitioners

Indonesian Health Practitioner Regulation

Herkutanto Herkutanto is a Forensic Pathologist, University of Indonesia, Jakarta, Indonesia.

Ian Freckelton is a Barrister, Lawyer Member, Medical Practitioners Board of Victoria, Psychologists Registration Board of Victoria and Honorary Professor, La Trobe Law, Melbourne, Australia.

The authors review the history of the regulation of medical practitioners in Indonesia and analyse the impact likely to be made by the establishment of a formal system of regulation by the Medical Practice Act 2004 (Indon). They argue that the new statutory scheme of registration and discipline has many positive features but is likely to be problematic to implement in a way that will achieve the objectives underpinning the scheme.
