Abstract from

To Discipline or Not To Discipline? Managing Poorly Performing Doctors

Alison Reid is the Medical Director of the New South Wales Medical Board, Sydney, Australia.

Australia’s system of medical regulation has served the community and the profession well since its establishment in the mid-19th century. But will it continue to do so? The NSW Medical Board has clarified the essence and purpose of disciplinary action against medical practitioners and developed a suite of effective, broad-based, non-disciplinary responses to complaints, aimed at early intervention and remediation. It has defined the areas in which practitioners’ fitness to practise should be considered in both their routine and exceptional interactions with the Board and reflected extensively on the framework within which medical practitioners’ professional conduct and professional performance can be viewed.
