Achieving an Equilibrium
Chris Puplick
Chris Puplick takes issue with David Marr's argument at 9 AG&LLJ. He argues that the continuum from hate speech to hate violence is too powerful to ignore and too compelling not to do something about it. Noting that there many restrictions on absolute freedom of speech and that the question is one of balance in a free and democratic society, and (citing Allport's The Nature of Prejudice) Puplick finds that harm minimisation requires the antilocution as well as the violence be proscribed.
