Professor Luke McNamara

Luke McNamara is a Professor in the School of Law and a member of the Legal Intersections Research Centre at the University of Wollongong. He is the author of Regulating Racism: Racial Vilification Laws in Australia (2002) and Human Rights Controversies: the Impact of Legal Form (2007), and has been involved in Criminal Laws since the 2nd edition (1996).

He recently completed a major interdisciplinary ARC-funded national study of the impact of hate speech laws in Australia (in collaboration with Professor Kath Gelber, University of Queensland). His current research focuses on the deployment of criminalisation as a public policy tool in relation to public order and anti-social behaviour.

He has previously served as an Adviser to the NSW Parliament’s Legislation Review Committee and was the Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Wollongong from 2007-2012.
